Mometasone furoate cream is a topical corticosteroid medication used to treat a variety of skin conditions characterized by inflammation, itching, and irritation. It is formulated with mometasone furoate, a potent synthetic corticosteroid known for its anti-inflammatory, antipruritic (anti-itch), and vasoconstrictive properties.
Indications
Mometasone furoate cream is typically used for:
Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis): A chronic inflammatory skin condition characterized by itchy, red, and inflamed skin. Mometasone furoate helps control flare-ups by reducing inflammation and alleviating the discomfort associated with eczema.
Psoriasis: A chronic autoimmune condition that causes the rapid buildup of skin cells, leading to scaling and inflammation. The anti-inflammatory properties of mometasone furoate help to reduce plaque buildup and redness associated with psoriasis.
Contact Dermatitis: This is a skin reaction caused by exposure to allergens or irritants. Mometasone furoate reduces the inflammation and itchiness caused by these reactions.
Seborrheic Dermatitis: A common skin condition that causes redness, irritation, and flaking, especially on the scalp, face, and chest. Mometasone helps to alleviate the symptoms by calming the skin’s inflammatory response.
Allergic Reactions: For rashes and inflammation caused by allergic responses to certain substances, mometasone furoate can help reduce irritation and itching.
Mechanism of Action
Mometasone furoate is a potent corticosteroid that works by inhibiting the production of inflammatory mediators, such as prostaglandins, and reducing the activity of immune cells involved in the inflammatory response. Specifically, it suppresses the release of substances like cytokines and histamines, which are responsible for the redness, swelling, and itching often seen in skin conditions.
Dosage and Administration
Mometasone furoate cream is typically applied to the affected area once daily. The amount to be applied should be a thin layer, ensuring the cream is evenly spread over the skin. It is important not to overuse the cream, as excessive application can lead to skin thinning and other side effects.
Duration of Treatment: Mometasone furoate should be used for the shortest duration necessary to control the condition. Prolonged use may increase the risk of side effects, such as skin thinning or systemic absorption, especially in children or on large surface areas.
Avoiding Sensitive Areas: Care should be taken to avoid the application of mometasone cream to sensitive areas, such as the eyes, face (unless prescribed by a doctor), and mucous membranes.
Side Effects
As a potent corticosteroid, mometasone furoate cream can cause side effects, especially if used for prolonged periods or on large areas of skin. Common side effects may include:
Skin irritation: Burning, stinging, or itching at the site of application.    Thinning of the skin: Prolonged use can lead to atrophy (thinning) of the skin, making it more prone to bruising or tearing.    Stretch marks (striae): Long-term use may contribute to the development of stretch marks, particularly when applied to areas with thinner skin.    Increased hair growth: In some cases, corticosteroids can lead to localized hair growth at the site of application.
Precautions and ContraindicationsBefore using mometasone furoate cream, patients should inform their healthcare provider if they:  Have skin infections (bacterial, fungal, or viral), as corticosteroids can worsen these conditions.    Are pregnant or breastfeeding. Mometasone should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit outweighs the risk, and caution is advised if applying it to large areas of skin.
